Root cellars were different from dugouts

The root cellar was an essential outbuilding on the farm. They were dug deeper than the living dugouts, had no windows, and had smaller entrances. The root cellar was used to store potatoes, apples, squashes, carrots, and other vegetables for the winter. In addition, home canned (bottled) fruits and vegetables were stored in the root cellar.
